    BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The first black head coach in the modern era of football was Art Shell of the Raiders.

The first photo was taken by staff photographer Leo Cohen on July 26, 1977 during Oakland Raiders training.

The second photo, taken by staff photographer Russ Reed on March 4, 1980, shows Art Shell (left) and Gene Upshaw in the locker room. Both Raider greats are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
